An old factory, looks like a warehouse, located in a so-so part of Bloomington, well off the beaten track. Seems to be getting five-star ratings for its modest gift shop, full of Beer Nut visors, t-shirts, and cans of, well, nuts. These things are available online, and at one time there was a Beer Nut store at the local mall which has since closed due to lackluster sales.
Beer Nuts are good, but not great. They are coated peanuts. With the variety of nuts available by more nut purveyors than at, perhaps, any other time in history, sold around every corner, from Trader Joes to Amazon, Beer Nuts are becoming something that only the Al Capps and Dagwood Bumsteads of the world eat if you recognize those references, Beer Nuts are perfect for you.
Bottom line: the company needs a refresh. The youth of today that comprise Beer Nuts sales for the next 30 years yawn when one mentions Beer Nuts. They buy Trade Joe's almonds. So, revamp the brand, start a factory tour, get a stronger social media presence, add some vigorous advertising, rejuvenate the accessories beyond Beer Nut fanny packs and bucket hats, and the company may survive.
However, continue on the same path, keep the title of "the favorite snack nut in your grandfather's pool hall", and we will see the shabby factory go the way of roller rinks and drive-in movies in a few short years. Finally, reinvent the product. Keep the "original" for die-hards, but add rejuvenated flavors, just as every other snack item from Oreos to Ritz crackers to Diamond nuts is doing.
Lest you will soon either be making Beer Nuts in South America, or adding plywood to the windows and setting varmint traps in Bloomington. Food safety, thats why not. We are sorry we have been unable to provide live factory tours since the early s, but being a company built on providing a high quality product and unique consumer experience, we can only offer a video tour in our Company Stores at this point.
While our plant and main Company Store is located on Washington Street between downtown Bloomington and Veterans Parkway, we also have a store located at the Shoppes at College Hills in Normal just off veterans that is open 7 days a week. This store moved from it's previously location at Eastland Mall where it did well to the Shoppes at College Hills next door to Starbucks to take advantage of better visibility and provide a better customer experience.
