He had signed his first WWE contract in and stayed with the company for over two decades. Later that year, he captured the WWE Championship and held it for days. They thought they would leave the Great Khali after using him. I tried to leave WWE long before but each time I tried, they offered me a contract. He lost the title to Christian on the November 1 episode of SmackDown!.
Upon further review, Layfield was not the primary person of interest behind the Ranallo situation, which has allegedly been resolved with his return to the company, nor was he ever disciplined by the company for anything related to Ranallo. WWE is a publicly-owned company, and certain members of the Board of Directors were appalled that Layfield kept his high-profile on-air position after stories emerged he was one of the leading bullies for years in the WWE locker room and a catalyst for the Ranallo situation.
McMahon instead correctly gambled that the story would simmer, which was greatly aided by Ranallo re-signing with the company to broadcast NXT. Questions remain in WWE bullying scandal.
Travel was another issue for Layfield. Layfield, on his own, began changing his travel so he would arrive in time solely for his responsibilities on SmackDown each Tuesday. He did this for nearly two months until he was confronted about it, and while company officials believed Layfield was simply burnt out from travel, he surprised executives when he put in his notice shortly after being confronted. But now it seems as if he will not hold the Title long. Word has it that JBL has told people backstage that he will be retiring in May. It featured him talking about a "historic thing" he would do at Wrestlemania But it looks like JBL is doing something historic after all. Since he is retiring in May, the IC Title will have to be taken off him, right? Well, not exactly; he is going to make history as the only person ever to retire as IC Champion.
Similar to what Trish Stratus did with the Women's Championship, he will not lose it, but they will probably hold a tournament to crown a new winner once he retires.
The IC is a Legendary title, and such action has never been taken before with this specific award.
